Plan a Running Route in 30 Seconds — Free Tool with Map Snapping

By · · 5 min read

If you're looking for a fast, free way to plan a running route, here's the short version: tap waypoints on a map, watch your route snap to real roads and paths, see distance and pace instantly, then run it with turn-by-turn navigation or export the GPX to your watch. No account. No tracing every corner by hand. No subscription. That's Runplanner.

Why a new running route planner?

Every running app we tried made route planning harder than it needed to be. Some wanted you to trace every turn by hand. Others required an account and an internet connection just to see a map. There had to be a simpler way to plan a run — one where the route snaps to real roads, you can see the elevation profile up front, and you can hand the GPX file to your Garmin or Apple Watch in one tap.

Runplanner is built to be the only app you need from the moment you plan your run to the moment you finish it.

The Features

  • Smart route snapping: Powered by Valhalla and OpenStreetMap, your routes follow real roads, trails, and pedestrian paths. The routing engine prioritizes safe, runner-friendly infrastructure — footpaths and cycleways over busy roads.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation: Once you've planned a route, run it with live guidance. You get street names, turn directions, distance to next turn, and off-route alerts that automatically re-route you back on track. Pause, resume, and track your progress in real time.
  • Roundtrip generator: Don't know where to run? Set a target distance and Runplanner generates a loop that starts and ends at your location. It's a great way to discover new routes in your neighbourhood or while travelling.
  • Weather & elevation: Check the forecast and elevation profile before heading out. See temperature, wind, precipitation, and total elevation gain so you know exactly what to expect on your route.
  • Workout plans: Build structured training sessions directly on your route. Define warm-up, interval, and cool-down segments with customizable pace zones, then follow along during your run with live tracking.
  • GPX export: Export any route as a standard GPX file. Compatible with Garmin, Google Fit, Strava, and any fitness platform that supports GPX imports.
  • Share routes instantly: Generate a QR code or shareable link for any route. Your friends can scan it or tap the link to import the route directly into their own Runplanner app.
  • Privacy first: No account required. Your routes, activities, and data stay on your device with AES-256 encryption. We don't track you, sell your data, or show you ads.
  • Undo & redo: Made a mistake? Undo and redo waypoints as you build your route. It's the small things that make planning enjoyable.

What's Coming Next

We're actively working on new features to make Runplanner even more useful. Improved surface detection, Strava sync, and iOS support are all on the roadmap. We'll share updates here on the blog as we ship them.

Runplanner is live on Google Play — free to download, no account required. If you have feedback or feature requests, get in touch via the contact page. We read every message.
