Snap to paths, or draw straight lines

iPhone + Android

Normally Runplanner snaps your route to paths: the line between two taps follows real footpaths, pavements, park paths and quiet streets. For a stretch the map doesn't know, like a beach, a field or an athletics track, switch snapping off and draw straight lines.

Switch snapping off or on

  1. While you plan or edit a route, find the snapping button on the right of the map, under the map layers button.
  2. Tap it. Green route icon means Snapping on. A grey line icon means Free-draw (no snapping).
  3. Tap the map as usual. In free-draw, each new stretch is a straight, dashed line.

The setting only changes the stretches you add after switching. Earlier stretches keep their shape, and moving or inserting a point keeps the setting of the stretch it's on. Snapping is always back on when you restart the app.

How snapping chooses a path

Runplanner uses OpenStreetMap and a walking profile that prefers footpaths and quiet streets and never sends you onto a motorway. Each stretch can be up to 50 km.

See a straight line you didn't ask for? The message Could not snap part of the route means the app couldn't find a path there, often because of a gap in the map data or no internet. Move the point a little closer to a path or try again in a moment. See The route won't follow the path.

Questions

Does a straight free-draw line count in the distance?

Yes. The distance is measured along every stretch, straight or snapped.
